MZ ETZ 301 WITH SUPERELASTIK SIDECAR

Since I ride motorcycle every day, no matter what kind of weather, a couple of winters ago I decided I was getting too old to fall over in the snow. The falling stays the same but with aging the healingtime gets longer and longer ;-)

I thought a sidecar might be a good idea ( as would trainingwheels but that would make me look ridiculous of course )
Not wanting to spend too much money on smething I wasn't sure of I started looking for a cheap motorcycle with sidecar and came across a nicelooking MZ ETZ 301 with SuperElastik sidecar.
Went to see it, liked it ( and liked the price ) and bought it.

I know it looks small ( well, it ís small ) but not as bad as it looks in the pic above , in which I look like one of those circusbears riding a small bicycle ;-)

Wife liked it too

It had been taken apart by the owner and painted all new

It came with a large box of tools and parts too

I picked it up with a car and trailer the next day, since I had never driven a sidecar before and only had heard the horrorstories of firtstime hackdrivers. It was quite a long way from home also and going on the freeway with a small 2 stoke didn't appeal to me too much ( still doesn't by the way )

I took a 5 1/2 hour sidecarlesson from Rob in Almere to learn to understand the sidecareffects on a bike.

A SuperElastik sidecar has easy accses for the monkey

I had some trouble getting it to run properly, it was quite slow too.

I fiddled with the original carb but bought a brandnew Bing in the end, with some serviceparts.....

.....which made it run a lot better.

I also changed the frontsprocket to a small size which increased speed a lot !!

Bought some books for working on the MZ

Had a feeling the clutch could do better so I took it apart, kickstarter had a problem too and that being on the same side ot the engine I hit 2 birds with one stone
( no animals were actually hurt during this procedure ;-) )

Yes, gloves because I didn't have my garage yet and it was freezing cold

Ropetrick is to stop the piston from moving ( and so the cranck from moving ) by stuffing the rope in the cilinder through the sparkplughole, very cheap and efficient.

That made it ride a lot better but there still was a weird problem which Dido from the Dutch MZ Forum was sure was caused by the wrong type of exhaust. The one that originally was on the MZ appeared to be homemade from 2 or 3 different types of exhaust.
So I scored the right type for this bike and all the problems were solved

Since it was still a rather slow motorcycle I decided I wanted a bigger bike with a sidecar as I really liked driving a sidecar
( you should have told me that years ago, would never have believed you ) so I started to look around for something else and came across a very nice BMW R 90/6

I decided to put the SuperElastik sidecar on the BMW since that would save me from looking for another sidecar and sell the MZ

Took some pics and put an ad on Marktplaats....

....but couldn't get a good price for it so I kept it and bought just a sidecarframe with wheel and fender from an ad on that same Marktplaats

and with this as inspiration ....

..... I started to build a transportplatform with eyelets all around for optimum fastening possiblities

Dave welded all the metal for it

resulting in me riding home with this, with a jerrycan full of pebbles for weight

I put a shoppingtrolley on it...

.. with a puppet with helmet in the "kiddy"basket

cusing people to sit backwards in their cars to take pics ;-)

I put a big seventies Speed 7 fairing on it, because I wanted to use this hack for winterdriving, since the lack of speed wouldn't be so obvious when it was snowing I would be in the way of the cagers.
Small enigen and skinny tires are perfect for winterdriving !

I got rid of the jerrycan with pebels but then the sidecar was too light so I bought 35 kilos of lead and melted that down in a box made from scrap diamondplate and mounted that inside the frame under the platform, works great !

Since everything in thr shoppingtrolley became very wet and kept smelling from the 2-stroke I bought a big plastic case I mounted on the platrofm, with an army bulletcase for the 2-strokeoil and sparkplug/tools

Like in all big motorcycle- and carshows you need a sexy model to show one's products:

;-)

Big Speed 7 screen wasn't high enough soI cut a piece off of an old windscreen I had lying around and made a kind of Laminar Lip

Secured it with the 3M stick-on fasteners I had left over from the laminar Lip on the K75

Because this winter ( 2011-2012 ) was rather cold for the Netherlands  ( down to -18 ° C ) I made some handprotectors to keep my hands out of the freezing wind and snow from 2 lids from plastic IKEA boxes calles "Slugis"

Bent them in shape by heating the fold with a burner and attached with 3 screws on each side. Took about 15 minutes to make and work very well

Meet Dombo:

Only thing was that the turbulence behind the hack because of the bigger and wider screen resulted in me smelling the 2-stroke oil all the time when driving so I resolved that with this:

Transportpossibilities work, I picked up a car exhuast and took it home on the hack
